Infant Mortality
Since Oklahoma is in the Bible Belt and since most folks around here profess great love for the unborn, you would think that we would have enormous concern and compassion for the going-to-be and newly born babies of our state. It is pathetic that our infant mortality is so atrocious. Not even at the level of so-called developed nations.
It's time that people put their piety into action, and not in the tsk-tsk-tsking form that it usually takes.

You are absolutely correct. Too often, the interest in children ends when they are born, especailly if they are already born and poor.
I read those statistics and am not sure the cause. Probably ignorance more than any systematic, institutional indifference to the welfare of children. I've not seen anything to suggest that someone who takes a child to the doctor or health department is turned away or does not get the help needed. Oklahoma has a lot of young mothers and in some areas, quite a bit of ignorance. Both those things contribute to not taking a child in for medical help. Is that why? I don't know. But I am not sure it has anything to do with some attitude, pro or con, about the value of children. Just my thoughts.
