A Rough Winter?
I noticed that the squirrels have been extra busy this year. My driveway is, as usual this time of year, littered with pecans. The big difference I have noticed this time is that all of them have been chewed by those cute little rats with fluffy tails. The squirrels are packing it in.
My mother reports similar observations with her Norman-based squirrels.
Do they know something we don't?

I can comment on the squirrels in my immediate neighborhood. I think they've been despondent... because an awful lot have been flinging themselves in front of my car on my way to work.
I've yet to put any out of their misery. But it's just a matter of time.
Oh, yes. It's just. A matter of time.
The squirrels in my neighborhood - the ones that don't end up as roadkill, anyway - are getting a bit more brazen. I suspect this is because of a change in command up in the trees: the blue jays, who patrolled the area last year and ran off the furry little SOBs, abdicated in favor of the robins, who by and large don't give a flip.
(This is not a red vs. blue comparison. Really.)
Winter is here! Update. Update.
