Where's our Whale Rider?
It's time that Oklahomans stopped comparing ourselves to Hollywood or Texas anywhere else in the US when it comes to making movies. How about looking to the Kiwis? New Zealand's population is 3.9 million, a mere 500,000 more than Oklahoma's. And Oklahoma's Gross State Product is $93.8 billion, more than New Zealand's $83.4 billion Gross Domestic Product. So why don't we have an Academy Award-winning movie from Oklahoma? Whale Rider is a world-class movie, and we can make one too. If we need more ammunition, all we need to do is think of Afghanistan. They have a totally devastated country and yet were able to make the acclaimed film Osama. It's time Oklahomans thought of themselves as actors on the world stage. Literally.
